The third largest city in Germany and the capital of Bavaria, Munich lies on the banks of the Isar river and on the fringes of the Bavarian Alps. It’s hard to believe that the city started as a monastery and later grew into a settlement with a market situated at the crossing of roads from Salzburg.
Munich is famous for its festivals, cultural and sports events, and of course, for its major places of interest, such as:
Munich Residenz. Being one of the most wonderful palaces in Europe, the Munich Residenz was the seat of Bavarian kings and dukes. The Residenz is not a single building, it counts on seven courts that are divided into three sections: the Alte Residenz, facing Residenzstrasse; the Königsbau, fronting onto Max-Joseph-Platz; and the Festsaalbau (Banqueting Hall), overlooking the Hofgarten. Today the residence houses several museums. The beautiful Court Garden with numerous ponds and fountains is a perfect place for a relaxing walk.
Marienplatz and the Neues Rathaus. Since the very city foundation, Marienplatz has been the central square of the city. At first, there was a market. Marienplatz houses the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus), a tall column in honor of the Virgin Mary named Mariensäule and a fountain with bronze figures called the Fischbrunnen. Marienplatz is home to many boutiques, restaurants. Here most festivals and events are held, including the Christmas Market yearly.
Frauenkirche. Late Gothic church built in the 15th century, the Cathedral Church of Our Lady, in German Frauenkirche, is impressive building with huge 100 meter high towers and Renaissance domes. Inside the church there is the black marble tomb of the emperor Ludwig the Bavarian and an altarpiece of the Assumption by Peter Candid.
English Garden. With the area of 910 acres, the English Garden in Munich is the largest city park in the entire Germany. Multiple trees and plants, winding streams with an artificial lake as a centerpiece. Few people know that originally the park was created as a military garden. Now it is especially popular among cyclists, joggers and people who love walking by bridle paths. This is also a great place for a relaxing picnic.
Nymphenburg Palace. A large majestic palace in Baroque style stands in the northwest part of the city. Originally that was a summer residence of the Wittelsbach electors. On each side of the palace there is the Nymphenburg Canal. The canal splits around the main building and then reunites again in a pool in front of the main facade. A marvelous view!
